10.4: The UK’s Role in International Affairs
The United Kingdom plays a significant role on the global stage through its membership in several international organisations dedicated to peace, human rights, and economic cooperation.
The Commonwealth
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 countries (as of the core text) working together to support democracy and development. Most members were once part of the British Empire.
- Head of the Commonwealth: The Monarch (currently King Charles III) serves as the ceremonial head.
- Core Values: Democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.
- Power: While it cannot pass laws for member states, it can suspend countries that violate its core values.
The European Union (EU)
The EU began as the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957. The UK joined in 1973.
Important Note for Students: While the historical text mentions the UK as a member, the UK officially left the European Union on January 31, 2020 (Brexit). However, for the purpose of the Life in the UK test, you should be familiar with the history of the EU and the fact that its laws are Implement through directives and regulations.
Other International Organisations
The UK is a founding or prominent member of several groups focused on security and human rights.
The Council of Europe
Separate from the EU, it has 47 member countries. Its primary goal is to protect human rights. It is responsible for the European Convention on Human Rights.
The United Nations (UN)
Founded after World War II to promote global peace and security.
- Security Council: The UK is one of the five permanent members (alongside the US, France, China, and Russia).
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
A collective defence alliance between European and North American countries. Members agree to defend each other if any one member is attacked by an external power.
